Commercial roof specifications, tapered design and details
Veteran Rep Group of Ohio helps architects, design professionals, building owners and roofing contractors across Northern Ohio specify and design commercial roofing systems from the manufacturers we represent: GAF, Siplast and Floe. That includes project specifications, tapered insulation design, rooftop details, shop drawings and project budgets, plus continuing education courses and contractor training. Project specifications
We help architects and design professionals specify and design the most efficient roofing systems according to the owner’s goals. Our team provides detailed project specifications to ensure your commercial roofing projects are executed flawlessly.
A roofing specification spells out the roof system and every component in it: the membrane, the insulation and its thermal value, how each layer is attached and what wind uplift it has to resist, the flashings and edge metal, the warranty the owner expects, and the submittals and inspections along the way. Specifications are usually written in the three-part format design teams use (general, products and execution), and GAF publishes three-part master specifications for its systems.
Tapered insulation design
We offer specialized tapered design and rooftop detailing services for optimal drainage and longevity of your commercial roofs.
A low-slope roof still has to drain. The International Building Code, which the 2024 Ohio Building Code is based on, sets a minimum design slope of one-quarter inch per foot (2 percent) for common low-slope coverings such as modified bitumen and single-ply membranes. On a flat deck, tapered insulation builds that slope: boards of increasing thickness slope the field to the drains, and crickets and saddles turn water around curbs, between drains and away from walls. A tapered layout drawing shows each board, its thickness and the resulting slopes, so the crew installs exactly what was designed.
Tapered systems are also how an existing roof with ponding water gets fixed at replacement time.
Rooftop details
Most leaks start at the details, not in the middle of the roof: perimeter edges, walls and parapets, curbs, pipe penetrations, drains and expansion joints. The manufacturer’s standard details are the starting point, and project-specific details cover the conditions they do not. See the detail libraries on our GAF and Siplast pages.
Shop drawings
Shop drawings show the roof plan, the tapered insulation layout and the details the crew will build, for review and approval before work starts.
Email us about shop drawings or call 216-258-3834.
Project budgets
Owners and design teams need a realistic number early. Project budgets put a roofing system and its options in front of the owner while the design can still change.
Continuing education and contractor training
Ask about continuing education courses for your design team and training for your crews on the systems we represent. GAF also lists its architect and specifier education on our GAF page.
